UK Inks Trade Agreement with Washington State, Eyes Florida Next

In a strategic pivot, Britain has successfully inked a trade deal with the US state of Washington. The initial intent was a holistic trade pact with the entire US; however, after President Joe Biden paused all discussions about free trade deals, the UK tactically pursued agreements at the state level. This approach was further necessitated post Britain’s exit from the European Union.

The details of the agreement were shared by junior business and trade minister, Nusrat Ghani, with Reuters. While confirming the successful memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Washington, Ghani indicated that Florida might be the next state to join the trade partner list. Beyond Florida, the UK is actively engaged in trade discussions with Texas, California, Colorado, and Illinois.

Washington becomes the sixth US state to formalize an MoU with the UK. Collectively, these agreements represent a combined GDP surpassing two trillion pounds.

Emphasizing the potential of these partnerships, Ghani highlighted vast collaboration opportunities across sectors. Washington, for instance, brings a robust aerospace industry to the table, complemented by strengths in clean energy, life sciences, supply chains, and agriculture. The MoU not only promises commercial synergies but also sets the stage for amplified capital investments.
